5 Zero-Proof Cocktails Worth Making This October

Can a zero-proof cocktail actually taste like the drink it’s replacing? With the right bottle behind it, yes. The non-alcoholic spirit category has gotten good enough that you can build a real Old Fashioned, a real Margarita, and a real Cosmopolitan without alcohol doing any of the work, and October is the month everyone’s asking.

Fast take: five zero-proof cocktails, one per major spirit, all built for a home bar. A whiskey-alternative Old Fashioned, a gin-alternative Bee’s Knees, a tequila-alternative Margarita, a rum-alternative Dark and Stormy, and a vodka-alternative Cosmopolitan. Each one uses a real zero-proof spirit brand, not a workaround.

Beer and wine got the N/A upgrade first. Spirits took longer, mostly because pulling flavor and body out of a neutral base without alcohol carrying it is a harder problem than brewing a low-ABV beer. The current generation of zero-proof spirits solved it well enough that these recipes hold up as actual cocktails, not consolation prizes.

A quick note before the recipes: every ingredient below- spirit, liqueur, and bitters- is 0.0% ABV as written, so none of these need a substitution to be fully N/A. Most of the bottles are shelf-stable and widely available online even if your local store doesn’t stock them yet. The one swap that trips people up is bitters. Traditional aromatic bitters like Angostura are made with high-proof alcohol, even though a cocktail only uses a few dashes. The Old Fashioned recipe below calls for All The Bitter’s Old Fashioned Aromatic Bitters instead, which is made at 0.0% ABV specifically so it works in both boozy and zero-proof drinks.

Zero-Proof Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is the drink that separates a real non-alcoholic spirit from a flavored syrup, because there’s nowhere to hide. Ritual’s Whiskey Alternative has enough caramel and spice to carry it.

• 2 oz Ritual Zero Proof Non-Alcoholic Whiskey Alternative
• 1/4 oz simple syrup (or one sugar cube)
• 2 dashes All The Bitter Old Fashioned Aromatic Bitters (0.0% ABV, built for this exact drink)
• Orange peel, for garnish

Stir the whiskey alternative, syrup, and bitters with ice until well chilled. Strain over a large ice cube. Express the orange peel over the glass and drop it in. This is the one recipe on the list where a standard grocery-store bitters would quietly add alcohol back in, so the swap matters more here than anywhere else on this list.

Zero-Proof Bee’s Knees

The Bee’s Knees is a Prohibition-era classic built to cover up rough bathtub gin, which makes it a natural fit for a gin alternative. Ritual’s version leans on juniper and pine, close enough to the real thing that the honey and lemon read as a proper cocktail, not a mocktail workaround.

• 2 oz Ritual Zero Proof Non-Alcoholic Gin Alternative
• 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
• 3/4 oz honey syrup (equal parts honey and warm water, stirred until dissolved)

Shake everything hard with ice for about 15 seconds. Strain into a chilled coupe. Lemon twist optional.

Zero-Proof Margarita

Ritual’s Tequila Alternative gets called out by reviewers as the most convincing of the bunch in a mixed drink, and the Margarita is where that shows. Grassy, a little smoky, with enough spice to stand up to lime.

• 2 oz Ritual Zero Proof Non-Alcoholic Agave Spirit Alternative
• 1 oz fresh lime juice
• 3/4 oz Lyre’s Orange Sec (a 0.0% ABV triple sec alternative, or 3/4 oz agave syrup if you’d rather skip a second bottle)
• Salt, for the rim (optional)

Salt half the rim of a rocks glass if you’re using one. Shake the tequila alternative, lime juice, and orange liqueur alternative with ice. Strain over fresh ice.

Zero-Proof Dark and Stormy

Two ingredients, and it’s the easiest one on this list to make well. Ritual’s Rum Alternative brings the molasses and pepper that ginger beer needs something to push against.

• 2 oz Ritual Zero Proof Non-Alcoholic Rum Alternative
• 4 to 5 oz ginger beer
• Lime wedge

Build over ice in a copper mug or a highball glass. Rum alternative first, ginger beer on top, squeeze the lime wedge in and drop it.

Zero-Proof Cosmopolitan

CleanCo built Clean V with this drink in mind, and the cinnamon and orange notes in the spirit itself mean you need less added flavor than most Cosmopolitan recipes call for.

• 1 1/2 oz CleanCo Clean V
• 1/2 oz Lyre’s Orange Sec (0.0% ABV triple sec alternative)
• 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
• 1 oz cranberry juice

Shake everything hard with ice. Strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass. Lime twist for garnish.

Building a Zero-Proof Bar Cart: Where to Start

Buying all five bottles at once is a real investment; most run somewhere in the $30 to $40 range per bottle. If you’re starting with one or two, the whiskey and tequila alternatives are the most versatile. Both hold up straight over ice, not just mixed, which stretches a single bottle across more nights than a rum or vodka alternative usually does.

Zero-proof spirits aren’t shelf-stable forever once opened, since there’s no alcohol content acting as a preservative. Most brands hold their flavor for somewhere between three and ten months after opening, depending on the brand, with fruit or cream-based liqueurs needing the fridge specifically. None of this makes them unsafe past that window, just flatter. Keep bottles in a cool, dark cabinet, and if a bottle’s been open for months, give it a taste before you build a whole round of drinks around it.

Where to Actually Find These Bottles

Most of these zero-proof spirits ship directly from the brand or through a retailer like Total Wine, and that’s still the most reliable way to get all five at once. A handful of well-stocked Milwaukee liquor stores are starting to carry a non-alcoholic spirits shelf, but it’s inconsistent store to store right now, worth calling ahead before you drive somewhere for one bottle.

If you’re looking for where to order a zero-proof cocktail instead of making one, that’s the more mapped-out side of things in Milwaukee. MockTale’s directory covers bars and restaurants across the city with a community review layer on top, drink by drink where the data exists.

The Details That Actually Change These Drinks

None of these recipes are complicated, but a few small things separate a decent version from a good one.

Ice matters more in zero-proof cocktails than in boozy ones, since there’s no alcohol slowing down dilution. A single large cube for the Old Fashioned melts slower than a handful of small cubes, which keeps the drink from going watery before you finish it. For the shaken drinks (the Bee’s Knees, Margarita, and Cosmopolitan), shake harder and longer than feels necessary, closer to 15 seconds than the quick five-second shake most people default to. Zero-proof spirits don’t have alcohol’s viscosity to help a shake integrate, so under-shaking tends to leave the citrus and syrup sitting on top instead of blended through.

Glassware isn’t just for show either. A coupe holds its chill longer than a rocks glass for the shaken-up drinks, which matters since these recipes don’t have alcohol’s natural resistance to going warm and flat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “zero-proof” actually mean? Zero-proof, alcohol-free, and non-alcoholic all get used to describe the same category of spirits, beers, and drinks built to come in at or near 0.0% ABV. Zero-proof is more common in cocktail and bar language; alcohol-free and non-alcoholic show up more on labels.

Do these substitute one-to-one for real spirits in any cocktail recipe? Mostly, but not always. Zero-proof spirits skip the alcohol’s texture and heat, so a recipe built entirely around that burn (a boozy Martini, for example) won’t translate as cleanly as something with more going on, like an Old Fashioned or a Margarita.

Are cocktail bitters alcohol-free? Not usually. Traditional aromatic bitters like Angostura are made with high-proof alcohol, even though a dash or two per drink adds up to a trace amount. This guide uses All The Bitter’s 0.0% ABV Old Fashioned Aromatic Bitters instead, so the Old Fashioned recipe above is fully N/A as written, not just close to it.

Do these only make sense for Sober October, or do they hold up the rest of the year? Both. October’s when people start looking for them, but nothing about a good zero-proof Old Fashioned expires on November 1st. Treat this as the start of a bar cart, not a one-month experiment, and keep making these in December (and beyond).

Do zero-proof spirits cost about the same as the real thing? Close, and sometimes more per bottle once you account for the smaller pours most recipes call for. They’re not a budget substitute; they’re a different bottle with a different job.
